Who Was Vincent van Gogh?
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most celebrated artists in history. A post-impressionist painter, he is best known for his vivid and expressive canvases, which often depicted rural landscapes and scenes from daily life. Born in the Netherlands in 1853, van Gogh endured many obstacles and struggled for much of his life to find success as an artist.
After moving out of his parent’s house around Christmas of 1881, he was exposed to the work of other great painters, and his style began to evolve. In his twenties, Vincent decided to take painting lessons with his cousin Anton Mauve, an accomplished artist who took Vincent under his wing, teaching him the basics of painting in watercolor and oils. Thanks to Mauve’s efforts, Van Gogh quickly realized his art techniques needed work, and he spent hours practicing his craft. Soon enough with practice, Vincent was able to develop his skills and establish himself as a talented painter.
In 1888, Vincent van Gogh decided to move to the city of Arles in order to find new inspiration for his art. He was immediately struck by the light and color of the city, and his work began to take on a new vibrancy and become more expressive. However, Van Gogh’s newfound happiness was short-lived when his friend and roommate, Paul Gaugin, threatened to leave after a series of heated arguments causing Van Gogh to have a breakdown. He famously cut off part of his own ear in an attempt to dissuade Gaugin from leaving and was subsequently hospitalized. After a few months of dealing with mental episodes, he later decided to admit himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy.
During his time at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Vincent continued to work on his art and produced around 150 paintings during his year-long stay at the institute. It was during this time that he created his famous Starry Night canvas, as well as an Almond Blossom painting that he sent to his brother Theo as a gift after the birth of his son.
However, Vincent’s time at the psychiatric hospital did not cure him of his mental episodes; in the summer of 1890, he walked into a wheatfield and shot himself, committing suicide. Despite his tragic death, van Gogh’s legacy has endured; his art is now among the most iconic and beloved in the world.
